Layered Spectrums
Layer unlimited Ocean Spectrum nodes in a single simulation for precise control over wave shape, blending spectra with Perlin noise for local wind detail.
GPU accelerated, spectrum-based ocean with object dynamics — directly inside 3ds Max.
Ocean
Introduced in FumeFX 7, NodeWorks Ocean brings powerful spectrum-based procedural wave generation to 3ds Max artists, with support for dynamic bubbles, foam and spray particles.
A dedicated Ocean Dynamics node simulates object interaction — producing realistic wakes and impact-driven foam while floating objects respond naturally to the ocean surface. The Ocean Spectrum is accelerated by CUDA GPU technology and integrated with PhysX rigid body simulation, delivering real-time performance and substantial time savings throughout production.
FumeFX 7.6 rebuilds Ocean Dynamics around a GPU wake solver that resolves Kelvin wakes, and adds a 2D Flow Solver, Dyna Whitewater foam and bubbles, and Ocean Spectrum textures that displace geometry without an ocean object.

01 Ocean
NodeWorks Ocean generates GPU accelerated, realistic procedural ocean waves using spectrum models and without noticeable tiling. Multiple spectrum nodes can be layered and blended with Perlin noise masks to create localized variations — from calm waters to stormy seas.

Particles generated from spectral wave motion react to wave velocity and render as Arnold points with full support for user data such as age and velocity.

A GPU wake solver resolves Kelvin wakes with engine force and direction controls. Wakes produce foam and bubbles that rise and turn into foam.

02 Ocean
Simulate dynamic boat wakes, raindrop ripples and other localized surface disturbances with two-way coupling, where objects influence the ocean surface and receive buoyant forces in return. Use NodeWorks PhysX for rigid body collisions, or Fibers for ropes, chains and anchors.

Any particle group can follow the waves. Turn floating particles into ISurf meshes and use them as fully dynamic fire and smoke sources for FumeFX.

Generate realistic rain ripples in real time with memory caching for instant playback — fine surface detail without a full fluid simulation.

Fibers integrate with Ocean Dynamics so buoyant forces interact with fiber constraints — ropes, chains and tethered objects respond to the waves.

FAQ
Make sure to extend your subscription on time, as we do not automatically charge credit cards to extend a subscription.
Once your FumeFX 7 subscription expires you will be able to load and render caches, but you cannot run a simulation or access and change any parameter inside the user interface. The same rules apply for FumeFX and NodeWorks, while ISurf requires a license for rendering.
Your FumeFX 5 perpetual license remains valid regardless of the FumeFX 7 subscription and you may continue to use it. However, FumeFX 5 is now an obsolete version and will not be updated.
We do offer an educational license at $95 for a one-year subscription. It is available for high school or college students, staff members, schools and other educational or non-profit organisations.
Contact us if you wish to order an educational license. Volume discounts are available.
